The "Crocodiles" are really a legend of the railways. Of course, we don’t speak about the ferocious and dangerous reptiles, but we are talking about the famous locomotives that have built, especially in Switzerland, the history of electric traction on difficult mountain lines.
The Ce 6/8 of Swiss Federal Railways were famous because since 1919 they allowed to overcome the rugged ramps of the Gotthard l’one; in their small way, the Ge 6/6 I of the Rhaetian Railway made possible to tow heavy trains on the Albula line starting the era of electric traction and the decline of the steam one on the RhB.
At the venerable age of ninety, the Ge 6/6 I 414 (together with the twin 415) continues to carry out normal line service. It seems almost impossible, but on the Rhaetian Railway the impossible does not exist. Thus, between Davos Platz and Filisur during the summer, two pairs of ordinary trains are carried out with historical material and the "crocodiles" of the Rhaetian provide for their towing.
They are machines that made the machinist's job "cleaner", making the physical effort of the stoker unnecessary, once called to shovel tons of coal into the oven of steam locomotives. Seen with today's eyes, however, the job of the driver of a Ge 6/6 I is not exactly a complete rest!
The Great Railway takes you to the Crocodile cabin: from Davos Platz to Filisur the line is downhill, but the driver has his work to do between maneuvering the dialer in front of the desk and the continuous adjustments with the handles on the desk. And then the dosage of the braking, the attention to the line and the signals with the characteristic whistle. Not exactly a walk: if we think of the levers or joysticks of the most modern locomotives comfortably operated while sitting on a comfortable chair, the driver standing in front of the Crocodile's control desk undoubtedly brings back to the epic times of the mountain railways! A truly breathtaking DVD!
