Rocchetta Sant'Antonio is located at the crossroads between Puglia, Basilicata and Campania; is a small town where there is a fabulous railway station, whose name is Rocchetta Sant'Antonio-Lacedonia. A station in thin air, we would say today, created on the bank of the Ofanto long ago (it was originally called Ponte Santa Venere) as a correspondence station among the railway lines for Foggia, Potenza, Spinazzola and Avellino. With a singular "U" shape, where trains pass from one bank of the river to the other, with unusually parallel paths!

It was a large station; Rocchetta was once an important stop. There was the goods warehouse and the large garage, the steam locomotives in Rocchetta could be supplied with water that came from the nearby river. A strategic point, this was Rocchetta.

Then there was the decline, also seen in many other stations: no more freight, very few passenger trains, then the closure of some lines, such as that of Avellino. And towards Spinazzola the line ends today in San Nicola di Melfi, a few kilometers from Rocchetta, and remains in operation only with the substantial freight traffic for the Fiat / SATA factory.

Rocchetta Sant'Antonio and the "forgotten" lines strike the enthusiast's mind. The trains with the wagons of cars pulled by the elderly D 445 and D 345 together are a rare sight to repeat elsewhere, as well as the old railcars that pass by Rocchetta and now don't even stop, because there is no one that anymore wait for the train. There are no connections to the other lines.
And then the abandoned stops or almost of the line for Avellino, now traveled only by historical trains; and Spinazzola station, where we arrived just in time to take pictures of the last passages of the trains under the old home signal perfectly functioning. Images that will make the history of the railway.
